What Is Red Light Therapy?

Red light therapy — also called photobiomodulation (PBM) — is the use of specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to stimulate natural biological processes in the body. It has been studied extensively since the 1990s and is now one of the most well-researched non-invasive wellness modalities available.

Unlike UV light, which can damage skin, red and near-infrared wavelengths are safe, painless, and deeply penetrating. They work by interacting with the mitochondria — the energy-producing structures inside your cells — to enhance cellular function and accelerate the body's natural healing processes.

How It Works

Cells contain structures called mitochondria that produce ATP (adenosine triphosphate) — the energy currency of the body. Mitochondria contain a protein called cytochrome c oxidase that responds to specific wavelengths of light in the red (630–700nm) and near-infrared (800–1100nm) ranges.

When these wavelengths reach the mitochondria, they stimulate greater ATP production. More cellular energy means:

  • Faster cell repair and regeneration
  • Increased collagen and elastin production
  • Reduced inflammation throughout the body
  • Enhanced circulation and oxygen delivery
  • Accelerated tissue healing

This is a measurable biochemical process documented in hundreds of peer-reviewed studies — not a wellness trend.

What Red Light Therapy Can Do for Your Health

Skin rejuvenation. Multiple randomized controlled trials have shown that red light therapy significantly increases collagen density, reduces fine lines, and improves overall skin tone and texture. The mechanism is direct: more cellular energy means more collagen synthesis.

Pain and inflammation relief. Red light therapy reduces pro-inflammatory cytokines while increasing anti-inflammatory ones. For conditions like arthritis, tendinitis, and chronic back pain, this translates to meaningful, drug-free relief.

Muscle recovery. Research shows red light therapy reduces delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), decreases markers of muscle damage, and improves performance in subsequent training sessions. It's widely used by athletes for this reason.

Wound and tissue healing. Red light therapy accelerates the healing of surgical incisions and soft tissue injuries by stimulating the cellular processes involved in tissue repair — making it a valuable complement to post-surgical recovery care.

Sleep and mood support. Near-infrared wavelengths have been shown to support melatonin regulation and reduce cortisol, contributing to better sleep quality and improved mood over time.

Immune function. By reducing systemic inflammation and supporting cellular health, regular red light therapy sessions can contribute to a stronger, more resilient immune system.

What to Expect During a Session

Red light therapy sessions are gentle and completely painless. You'll be comfortably positioned while the light is applied to the target area. Sessions typically run 10–20 minutes. You may feel a mild, pleasant warmth. Eye protection is always provided.

There is no downtime — you can return to your normal activities immediately. Many clients choose to combine red light therapy with a massage session for a comprehensive, layered approach to recovery and wellness.

How Many Sessions Do You Need?

Results are cumulative. Most people begin noticing improvements after 4–6 sessions, with more significant changes after 10–12. For ongoing maintenance and general wellness, monthly sessions are typically sufficient. For active recovery or specific health goals, more frequent sessions may be recommended initially.

Is It Safe?

Red light therapy has an excellent safety profile. It does not damage DNA, cause sunburn, or produce harmful heat. The main precautions are:

  • Eye protection should always be worn during sessions
  • Not recommended directly over active cancer sites
  • Consult your physician if you take photosensitizing medications

At Lotus Holistic Wellness, our therapists are trained in proper red light therapy protocols and will tailor each session to your specific health goals.
